--- Amy Jacques Garvey, was a Jamaican pioneering journalist and activist of the 20th century. She migrated to the United States where she became an active member of the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) and later married Marcus Garvey. Amy did not remain in the shadow of her powerhouse husband, instead she became a representation for the women in the organization simultaneously the face of the UNIA while Garvey was incarcerated. Amy, like her husband, was committed to self-reliant, black nationalism, & African independence. ---
