---Boukman was a literate Jamaican Maroon slave. When Boukman was transported to Haiti, he was made a slave driver on a plantation. This gave him the opportunity to foster secret meetings with the slaves. He was on a mission to end slavery or die trying to. It is noted that he was a historical decent of Nat Turner, who also ignite a rebellion in Virginia on August 21, 1831.---
