---Songhai Empire was the largest and last of the triple major pre-colonial empires to involve in West Africa. The Songhai people founded Gao around 800 A.D. and made it their capital in the 11th century. While the city and region grew in importance, the Malian Empire began to crumble and Gao rebelled in 1375. Songhai began to conquer major culture and commercial centers, such as Mema and Timbuktu.---
